The Harmonie German Club Canberra Incorporated was established on the 9th of June 1961. The first sod was turned in August 1963. two months later, the then German Ambassador Dr. Ritter laid the foundation stone. In order to keep costs down and to raise funds, it was decided that those members who donated $25.00, building material or did five days work would be regarded as "foundation members". Their names can now be seen on the honor board, close to the member's bar. The donations from members and their hard work sped up construction and the building was officially opened by Dr. Ritter on 3rd October 1964. Extensions were completed in February 1972, giving us the building that you see today.

On the left-hand side of the driveway into the club building you can see a large segment of the Berlin Wall. It weighs 3.5 tonnes and stands 3.6 meters high by nearly two meters wide, it once stood in Potsdamer Platz close to the Brandenburg Gate. It is the largest section of the Wall in Australia and was unveiled on 3 October 1992 by Dr. Roever, the then Minister-Counsellor and Deputy Head of the German Embassy. It is dedicated to peace and unity throughout the world.
